History

Houston Skyline Studio (HSS) was formed in the summer of 2006.  The goal of the studio was two-fold.  One; we all needed space to shoot and two; we wanted to create a community for Houston photographers.  OK – so, what’s a “community?”  It’s a group of people that associate with one another for a shared purpose.  What’s our purpose here?  TAKE BETTER PHOTOGRAPHS!  Improve the craft, improve one another.

How do we do this?  Simple – we provide a place for Houston photographers to work and to learn.  Do you have an assignment but you have no place to shoot it?  We rent.  Do you need space for a project?  We rent.  Are you new and you need to learn a skill or a technique?  We have a workshop for that.  Whatever it is, we have a workshop – or a shooting opportunity.

Speaking of workshops – we host something here every month.  We’re trying to build community – so are they free?  Heck no – we have to pay models, makeup artists, studio rent and the electric bill – not to mention LOTS of great equipment and sets.  By the way – models and makeup artists are part of our community, so you want us to pay them.  You should pay them yourself – when you shoot your projects.  We list models and makeup artists on our site.  The criterion to be listed is that you’ve worked with two or three of us and that you’ve been judged by us as reliable talent.

Another thing about workshops and shoots – we take suggestions.  We survey folks on our studio mailing list but we also take unsolicited e-mails.  If you have a workshop topics you’d like – ask.  If you have a model that you’d like to shoot – give us his/her name.

On the rental side, we have 2,500 square feet of rental space.  We have a regular rental operation.  We have dressing rooms, makeup rooms, furniture, hanging backdrops and areas that are painted white and black.  We have a car ramp for bringing in equipment or bringing in a car or bike to shoot.  That’s a bunch of opportunities.  And if there’s something we don’t have – ask.

How do you become part of this community?  First – sign up for the newsletter.  Second – come participate in SOMETHING; a workshop, a shoot, an open house.  One thing you’ll find – whenever the studio hosts an event, the four partners are always there.  We can offer advice, insight, experience, and someone that understands the conversation.  To have a conversation, you have to come by and talk!

See you around the studio
