A Lighting Skills Workshop

The face is the window to the soul and a portrait is the art that captures that soul. This workshop will teach you a number of ways to make great portraits and headshots. You’ll learn single light, multiple light set ups as well as a number of natural light methods of taking great portraits.

You’ll also learn what makes a great actor’s headshot and simple ways to create great ones.

The model is one of the most important people on your shoot. How much time do you spend talking with the model and understanding what you need to do to get the most out of the professional relationship? The first part of this workshop will be a shooting demonstration of how to work with a model on the studio floor. We will have two shooting stations. For the second part of the workshop, the models will sit for a panel discussion on what worked for them in the shooting portion of the workshop. Jerry will lead the Q&A with a model panel using questions that we have received. You are of course welcome to ask questions from the floor.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for photographers is taking a concept and creating an image from the idea. Ron Davis will lead participants through the creation of an image from the development of an idea, through producing and dressing a set, to capturing the image. Ron will focus on creating the perfect pin-up image – the preparation, the production and all the small details that make an image “pin up” and not just glamour.

What makes a nude image “fine art?” This workshop is designed to teach the basics of photographing the nude figure using studio lighting. The course will be in two parts. The first part will be an instructor-led discussion of the creative influences around how and why we photograph the nude figure, and what lighting techniques help fulfill these goals. The second part of the workshop will cover a hands-on demonstration of typical lighting set ups for figure photography. The instructor will demonstrate the equipment and techniques for lighting the nude with studio strobes.

This workshop is designed to demonstrate the basic equipment and techniques for lighting a portrait with studio strobes. The workshop’s focus is capturing a portrait using studio strobes. The workshop will review light modifiers – such as softboxes and barn doors – and demonstrate their effect on a portrait.
