Practice Sessions
HSS workshops are designed to have an educational goal. We’re teaching you a specific skill or technique. However, once you’ve been introduced to the technique the next step is providing the opportunity to practice. One of the barriers to learning studio lighting is the opportunity to work in a fully-equipped studio.
The participants in our workshops have asked for additional opportunities to shoot. HSS has responded with our series of “Practice Sessions.” These are 100% shooting opportunities. All lighting equipment and setup are provided. Models and makeup are part of the shoot. When you arrive the HSS partner that is managing the shoot will introduce the models, discuss the genre to be shot and review the lighting. You will have the opportunity to share the shoot with other photographers and receive coaching from the HSS representative at the shoot.
Each shoot will feature one or two models – depending on the number of participants that have pre-registered. The maximum number of photographers is 10. Models will be hired by HSS staff and you can feel comfortable working with them because they have a track record with HSS. Often, the models will be the same models that were featured in the HSS workshop.
Photographers will shoot one at a time using the radio controllers on one of two sets (one set per model) that have been set up for the day.
All HSS practice shoots are held on Saturday afternoons from 1:30PM – 4:30PM on the day of the HSS monthly workshop. There is a maximum of ten (10) photographers, with a model-to-photographer ratio of no more than 5:1. All makeup, clothing, sets, and lighting will be set up by HSS. HSS will provide a standard workshop release for the model to sign. Although not obligated, photographers are encouraged to share selected images with the models to enhance the model’s portfolio with your work.
